Swish Swish by Katy Perry - Music Video Analysis

The video begins with an establishing shot that shows the stadium where the basketball match, the main focus of the video, takes place. This then continues to switch to a shot of Katy Perry, panning in to a mid shot at a low angle. Then, there is a straight angle mid shot of the two game commentators as they discuss the team, followed by a mid shot of the players and the coaches. There is a mid to long shot of the whole team sitting on a bench and then a close up of Katy and a compilation of mid shots of the crowd and the mascots to help set the scene. Then there is a long shot as the teams run on to the court followed by a mid shot as they size each otherup just before they begin to play. There is an extreme close up of Katy's team as they try to intimidate the other team,  and then a panning low angle shot as the referees bring the ball to the court. This is then followed by by a birds eye view shot as they throw the ball up in the air to start the match and a reaction shot as Katy gets the ball, although shortly thereafter there is a straight angle mid shot as she loses it.

There are a range of long shots as the team run away from the others, and a few close up shots of each player to give a profiling of what they are like, with a few reaction shots. Furthermore, there are also panning closeups as the team sit disheartened on the bench as they stand little chance of winning, and then a couple of mid shots as she regains confidence and prepares to play again. There are a mixture of long and mid shots as she continues playing and then a cose up as she loses a tooth as shes hit by the ball. Then Nicki Minaj appears and the shot starts as long but then pans in at a high angle. We then cut to a close up of Katy as she notices Nicki and then back to Nicki as she begins her rap, with a combination of mid, close up and extreme close up shots. It then cuts to a long shot as the dancers are introduced and an extreme low angle. Nicki then finishes her rap and exits and the camera pans the team as they gain confidence to play again, and again we see a long straight angle shot as they play and begin to score goals and level up the score, signalling a new hope. The video ends with Katy singing with the whole team with a few mid and close up shots at a straight and low angle.

Some scenes in the video are in slow motion and some in fast and this helps to create a sense of tension, as by slowing down crucial scenes we create more drama and by speeding up shots such as scoring goals etc we help to create a sense of immense triumph. There are no dissolving shots as every shot is clean cut and sequenced, and this helps to make the video more entertaining as drama is constantly entrailing. The long shots show camera motivation as it allows us to see the whole team and the game and the close up shots help to show chartecter emotion. There ae a few montages of shots, such as scoring goals and the coaches frustrations and this helps to show continuality in the video and shows a story. The music would be non diegetic sound as the video would have been filmed and things such as Nicki's rap and Katy's singing would have been dubbed over the top. The music matches the action as the slow gradual build s up to the chorus shows their slow start but the chorus and Nicki's rap show a crescendo, which matches the scene as this is when Katy and the team begin to win. The lighting in the video is definitely high key as this is reflective of the theme of the video, an upbeat dance tune. There is low key lighting when Nicki enters but this helps to create the effect that she brings light to the dank and dark scene.
